In 2006, the Indonesian Society of Thoracic Radiology (ISTR) was born from the vision of a group of passionate radiologists who saw the need for a specialized focus on thoracic imaging. This fledgling organization faced a significant challenge: differing perceptions on whether the cardiovascular system should be included within its scope, or if it should solely focus on the respiratory system. This debate shaped the early years of the ISTR, as members worked tirelessly to
find common ground.

After five years of dedication and perseverance, their efforts bore fruit. In 2011, the ISTR was officially registered as an affiliation of the Indonesian Society of Radiology (ISR). This milestone was a testament to the commitment of its founders and members, who had navigated through internal discussions to establish a unified vision.

Dr. Aziza Icksan, the founder of ISTR and a pioneering force in the Chest Division, was appointed as the first president of the society by the ISR. Dr. Aziza, along with three other radiologists who shared her passion for thoracic imaging, laid the foundation for what would become a vital organization in the field.

The first meeting of the ISTR was held in the charming city of Malang. The chosen topic, "Emergency Chest Radiology," highlighted the urgent and essential nature of thoracic imaging in medical emergencies. This inaugural event marked the beginning of many more gatherings that would drive forward the knowledge and expertise in thoracic radiology.

The ISTR’s journey from its inception to its establishment as a recognized society is a story of vision, debate, and unwavering dedication. Today, it stands as a beacon for those in the field, continually advancing the understanding and practice of thoracic radiology in Indonesia.
